Jack reaches out

Jack in his coat

I’ll be clear…I never wanted a dog that needed clothes. Red, my last little guy, did need boots when the temps dropped below about 15 degrees F, but his feet were the only thing that got cold. In fact, he’d usually sleep right by the door regardless of the outside temperature.

Jack? Not so much. When the sun is streaming into my living room, he’s there, sleeping in it. And after his haircut I had to sort of drag him outside. “Uh uh. I don’t need to go out. I’m good waiting in here for you.” That’s what he was saying.

So I broke down and got him a coat. Actually, I got 2. This one is medium weight and the other one (which he hasn’t seen yet…it’s a Christmas present) is warmer. He definitely likes it. And doesn’t he look spiffy in it?

Here’s my rule of thumb, which seems to be working: if I need to wear my hat or my scarf, Jack needs his jacket. Probably when I need to wear both he should wear the warmer one, but like I said, he hasn’t seen it yet. (At least not with his eye open. I did try it on him to make sure it fit, but I made him close his eye to not ruin the surprise. LOL!)

Looks aside, here’s the news. The other day I needed to walk to the bank. Although it wasn’t cold out and I had on neither hat nor scarf, we had gotten rained on that morning and those heavy ears of his were still wet. I didn’t want him balking at the walk, so tossed his jacket in the dryer (it was still wet, too), put it on him nice and warm, and off we went.

I meant to put some doggie treats in my pocket, figuring he might need them when we went into the ATM lobby – as far as I planned to go. When I was about half way there I realized I’d forgotten to load my pocket, and wasn’t going to turn around.

When we got to the lobby, no one was in it, so we were good to go. As I was conducting my transaction a suited man from the bank came out with a standard dry dog biscuit in his hand and asked if he could give Jack a treat. “Sure, you can try.”

Bank dude squatted down and held out the treat, saying something pleasant to Jack. Jack stretched out his neck to gently take the biscuit and ate it.

As my daughter said when I told her, “He’s such a surprising little weirdo.” I concur. But I also know for a fact that he has made lots of progress since we went to puppy class. He still has a long way to go, but his confidence/trust level has risen significantly. At least when he’s leashed. And when it’s not my son.

One step at a time, little man. One step at a time.

All wrapped up

presents under the tree
I met my goals for today. I got photos taken of all the things I made (some better quality than others, but you can’t see any of them anyway). I got ALL of my Christmas wrapping done. Presents under the tree for my celebration here with my son.

And presents that I’ll take somewhere else for celebrations.
wrapped presents

I also got the presents wrapped and out the door for 4 boxes that needed to be mailed. Nothing is left to wrap. I hung our stockings several days ago, and now I have all the things I need for stocking stuffers.

stockings hung

I got the Italian bread baked.

Italian bread

I definitely like the look of 3 diagonal slashes better than the long slash. The bread has a nice texture, but I like a crunchier crust. I fumbled as I was putting the bread in the over and making steam, and let too much heat out. Oh well. Better luck next time.

I may still bake a batch of date nut bread this evening. Or not. Tomorrow all I have to do is donate blood in the morning and babysit in the evening. There’s plenty of time to bake 3 batches of bread in between. Once that’s done, all my Christmas prep will be complete.

Except the waiting. Waiting for Santa always gets me excited. Santa

Done and done

KG's wraps, light and dark wefts

It’s been more than a week since I finished weaving the warp for KG and me, but I didn’t finish the off-loom work and get them in the mail until today! Some of that was because of an agreement KG and I had reached about timing. Then, since I was working on Christmas gifts I put the last steps for KG on the back burner. Suddenly, OMG, I needed ‘wrap up’ those wraps and get them mailed! So this afternoon I pressed, labeled, photographed, and packaged, and made it to the post office 15 minutes before they closed.

I took advantage of the late day natural light to show the colors realistically for the two wraps, one with a white weft and one with charcoal.

Then I wanted to get another shot of them rolled, and tried shooting them on the castle of my loom. I think it worked reasonably well, and it’s much easier to see the colors and detail than in the first photo.

KG's wraps, rolled and ready to go

I haven’t totally figured out what I’ll do with the pieces I wove for myself, but I won’t be doing anything with them till after the holidays, so no worries.

I am now officially done making Christmas presents. Tomorrow I’ll use the natural light to photograph all the things I made, but the big reveal online won’t happen till after 12/25.

Tomorrow I’ll also start wrapping, since we’re celebrating Christmas with my sisters on Sunday. I’ll also do the next steps in making my sample Italian bread, since that’s my assignment for Christmas dinner. Depending on how things go I may also make a batch of my grandmother’s date nut bread, a Christmas tradition for giving.

Sound like too much for one day? It may be. I’ll be happy if my Italian bread turns out well and I get things photographed and wrapped. The date nut bread can wait till Saturday. I also want to get packages out to my niece, nephew, and friends on Saturday. Hmmmm….maybe I better focus on wrapping and those packages on Friday, since Saturday PO hours are short.

Quickie

No pix today, but lots of work. I got the warp that I planned last night wound, beamed, threaded, and woven!!!

One more 4+ yard warp to go for Christmas presents. I got it planned tonight, but I’ll be lucky to get it wound and beamed tomorrow since I have some other commitments.

And of course I haven’t had time to do any of the off-loom finishing on either of the last 2 warps.

Going great guns

towels

Once more I’m forced to black & white since I’m working on Christmas presents. But I’m really happy with this warp. Yesterday, amidst other things, I planned, measured, and beamed a 4+ yard warp, starting the threading. Today I finished threading and wove it all.

Tonight I planned the next 4 yard warp. Tomorrow I’ll measure and beam it, and see how far I can get in threading. The warp has many more colors and color changes, so the measuring will be much slower. But I’m making great progress and I still have 10 days left. 🙂 I can do my Christmas cards at night in front of the TV.
