Not Zen

Many people – weavers and non-weavers alike – think of weaving as a Zen-like experience. Throw the shuttle, beat, throw the shuttle, beat, throw the shuttle, beat. The rhythm and simplicity of the movements do have that potential.

For me, a relatively small amount of time is in Zen mode. Because I tend to do somewhat complex weaving patterns, I’m generally repeating the treadling sequence in my head: 1-2-3-4-3-2, 2-3-4-5-4-3, 3-4-5-6-5-4, 4-5-6-7-6-5 or whatever. My first weaving teacher instilled in me the confidence I needed for complex weaves: “If you can say it, you can do it.” That belief has served me well.

Even when I’m weaving my basic hearts pattern, which I’ve now woven for dozens of yards, I say the pattern repeatedly, or I get distracted by NPR, TV, music, or simply the wanderings of my mind.

Actually, one of the things I like to do when I’m weaving is planning. Planning my next warp. I usually start thinking about it after I’ve woven a few yards on the current warp. Sometimes I leave the loom and sit down with my weaving software to explore what’s in my mind.

That’s where I was at 5:30 this morning, working on Fiberworks to try various possibilities. Some weaving books surrounded me for inspiration. I definitely want to weave some more shawls, and I was sort-of-sure I’d work in rayon and/or tencel.

Would I try some doubleweave windows? That’s what I really wanted to do, but I needed to do a bunch of testing with cotton to make sure I fully understood the layout. Was I willing to do that?

What about doing some single color 8H lace weaves? I knew I could achieve quality in a relatively short amount of time. Maybe trying to warp with 1 strand each of the matte-finish cashmere-silk and the really lustrous tramm silk? How would that work and look? Or maybe warp with the matte finish and weft with the luster?

How about spending some time with color blending and let the color tell the story, not the pattern? Do I have enough colors that play well together to achieve the transitions I want?

Maybe something simple & classy, like an 8H twill in neutral colors? Or a complex weave in a gebrochene, snakeskin, or snowflake twill?

My mind was in a whir. Time to walk away from the planning and get back to the loom. Maybe the answer will come to me while I weave CW’s baby wrap and take my walk.

A girl can hope.

Real Progress

KC's custom baby wrap

I’m making real progress in my weaving. I’ll likely be finished weaving KC’s custom baby wrap today. Then I’ll start with CW’s.

It was definitely the right thing to do to throw away the first, messed up warp. This one is working so smoothly it’s a pleasure to weave.

The sun is shining today, so I’ll go do some weeding in the garden, too.

Begin Again

Remember that old kid’s song about Michael Finnegan? There are lots YouTube versions; I chose this one to share with you.

Why? I couldn’t stop it from running through my mind repeatedly today.

KC & CW- starting over

Does that look familiar? I’m once again measuring the warp for KC & CW’s custom handwoven baby wraps. THIS time I won’t make any mistakes while beaming that warp!

I’ve also finished EC & EH’s wraps, and have woven 3 silk shawls. I’ll take pix of the shawls after they’re fringed & wet finished.

Whew!

It’s been a long time since I’ve posted, but I have an excuse. No, not an excuse, a good reason.

I’ve been cleaning. Like MAD! Hours and hours, cleaning and polishing every bit of woodwork in my house – and there’s a LOT of wood. Clearing every flat surface. Scrubbing everything sparkling clean, cleaner than it’s been in years. Or probably decades.

Making the inside of my house ready for listing – which should happen in the next day or two.

It’s an unusual home, built using timberframe construction. 7 rooms on the first floor, a loft-style second floor with two large bedrooms and another small room that has changed purposes over the years. A 26′ clerestory. Hardwood floors throughout most of the first floor.

Full basement, 2+ car garage, plus another large outbuilding. A beautiful country setting, yet only 1/2 mile off a main road.

Mature perennial gardens with over 100 varieties, plus shrubbery, including well-producing blueberry bushes.

23 acres, with a well-managed forest covering about 15 of them.

Do I have you ready to start packing up your current digs yet? I hope so!

(I’ve been weaving, too, but haven’t taken pix of anything – too busy!)

Remembering 13

When I was in 7th grade or thereabouts, I used cartridge pens, as did most (all?) of my classmates. The one I liked the best looked like the picture – transparent blue so I could see the ink level. cartridge pen

I much preferred the peacock blue ink to the standard dark blue or black. My teachers didn’t share my sense of color, and I remember getting chastised about it more than once.

I got a visual flash of the color of the peacock ink on the white paper while I was weaving today.

I worked really hard today. Returned the rental van. Washed a load of clothes and got them dry on the line. Laid out and dried my 3 awnings, which got rained on at about 4PM at the show yesterday. Set up the frame of the roof of my tent and put the top on it, for the same reason. (Thankfully the sides were dry.) Mowed two sections of my lawn. And then came inside and wove 3 yards of E&E’s baby wraps. I got the cream section done and a bunch of the marine section.

I had a very good show this weekend in East Aurora. I sold four nice shawls and want to weave more summer weight ones – silks, rayons, and/or cottons – before my two show in August. So while I don’t have the replacement yarn for K&C yet, it can’t be too far away, and I want to get E&E’s wraps off the Macomber so I can put on a silk shawl warp.

Tomorrow’s schedule includes 4-5 hours of focused house cleaning with my neighbor and her daughter. They’re helping me get the house ready for photos, listing, and hopefully sale. Then more weaving.

I need many more hours in the next few weeks. Got any you can sell at a reasonable price?
