I’d forgotten

It’s been so long since I’ve woven lace, I’d forgotten just how much I like this weaving. Especially as scarves — they thread quickly, treadle easily, and the weaving just goes so fast! Plus I’m back on my sweet little counterbalance loom.

cotton & rayon lace

I used a variegated cotton warp and solid-colored rayon wefts, 2 in blue and one in green. Instead of fringing these I’m going to sew them into infinity scarves. In my mind I’m going to make several more infinities in other colors & designs. I hope I get them done before the show season starts.

I ended up with only 2 scarves out of that last warp. I started the second in the same tie up & treadling as the first, but a brighter blue. The weft was a bit heavier yarn (5/2 instead of 8/2) which didn’t work so well with the pattern, but the killer was the selvedges. I could NOT get them to look decent no matter what I tried. So I stopped. Again figured it was better to waste thread than time.

So I changed the tie up and treadling pattern and wove the next scarf in a pattern I do really like. Should have done this from the beginning. What an amazing difference between these two scarves, beyond the colors!

two very different scarves

The yarn for the next batch of wraps arrived, so tomorrow I’ll start measuring that warp.

Meanwhile, I’m making a few improvements to my home to try and get it sold quickly. On Friday men came and put a whole lot of stone on my driveway, which had been washing out for a few years. It needs a few good rains to help settle it in, but it makes a much better first impression for a potential buyer. I’m hoping I can get other men here in the next week or so to do the other things I have in mind. Sometimes scheduling is hard.

Hills & Valleys

It’ll be at least 3 or 4 days until the yarn for the next baby wraps arrive. So in the meantime I’m weaving some scarves. I really need to weave a bunch of new stuff for my summer shows.

I decided to try a pattern I’ve been wanting to do for some time from Carol Strickler’s 8 Shaft Patterns book. I really liked it in draft form (#169).

I know I need some more blues in my stock, so I measured out baby blue tencel for the warp & got the loom set up. I’m using navy for the weft. I have to say, I like the draft better than the actual weaving. The colors are not even close to being accurate in this photo.

I like it better when I’m far away from it — or in the photo — than when I’m sitting at the loom. I’m hoping I like it more after it’s wet finished. I’ll probably do another scarf with this tie up & treadling, but a different weft color. This one doesn’t send me.

This draft is also a challenging treadling pattern…it’s 128 pics long, and I have to really concentrate to not mess up. I actually think I did mess up in the beginning, but I wasn’t positive so didn’t want to unweave.

I got PK’s wraps all finished and in today’s mail. On the left is dark mauve cotton weft, on the right is shell tencel.

Dark mauve to shell weft

My cleaning helper came yesterday. She’s been really busy and could only give me one day this time. Sigh. So she did the upstairs while I cleaned the weaving studio and pantry. That leaves just 2 rooms: kitchen & living room. Cleaning them won’t be too bad, I don’t think. I’m away from home all day today, but I’ll do one room on Sunday and another on Monday.

On an unrelated note my wireless router died. I tried giving it CPR, but alas, had to ‘call it’ as they say on the doctor shows. I can still connect to the internet by moving my laptop to the modem and connecting with an ethernet cable, but it is most decidedly NOT convenient. So I ordered a new router and even sprang for expedited shipping. Still won’t be delivered till Monday. Double sigh. So today, while I’m away from home, I’m taking advantage of fast wi-fi at a coffee shop & doing some online tasks. Like this blog post.

Segue to baby wrap progress….

Above is the photo of me going from PK’s dark mauve cotton weft to her shell tencel weft. A really dramatic difference. Although it doesn’t show in the photo, in addition to the lighter color, the tencel brings a bit of sheen to the wrap, too. And the feel will be quite different, as well.

shell weft up & down

I’ve finished weaving PK’s short baby wrap with that shell tencel, and I’m a little over 1/3 of the way through JS’s natural tencel weft. I can see the difference in these two colors on the loom, but knew that the colors were too close for my camera (or maybe it’s my camera skills) to pick up, so settled for showing you the two sides of the warp with the light-colored weft. My favorite part with the light weft is the raspberry to mauve to blue. So bright & cheery.

This morning I did my hour+ of planning to figure out how many yards of each color I’ll need for my next batch of 2 baby wrap warps. But I’ll wait till I get back home to my secure network to order the yarn.

Loaded up

wood ducks

I looked out at my pond this afternoon and saw 2 male and 1 female wood duck floating around while it was sprinkling. They really are beautiful birds. The poor quality image is because I had to shoot it through the window…wood ducks spook very easily, and I knew if I opened the door they’d fly away.

My brain and body can both be filled with activity that isn’t weaving. Right now it’s doing the spring cleaning to once again get my house all pretty for showing it. The schedule for my helper isn’t working as well as planned, so Monday I decided I’d simply take on one room a day. That way it’s manageable for me, since I really hate cleaning.

My method of handling jobs I don’t want to do is to do the worst thing first. For me, that’s the basement. On Monday I did the basement. On Tuesday I did the bathroom. Today I did my bedroom. I’m happy with my progress, it just pulls me away from from my loom.

Still I’ve finished weaving PK’s first warp, with dark mauve cotton weft. My favorite part is the dark pink to raspberry. Yummy.

Tomorrow I’ll start on her shorter wrap, with a light tencel weft.

Ain’t she nice

Look her over once or twice.
Now I ask you very confidentially, ain’t she nice?

PK & JS in the reed

I know, I know, that song’s so old – and this isn’t even the first part – that most readers won’t know what I’m talking about. Oh well.

I’m happy with my progress yesterday. I got the warp beamed and threaded through both heddles & reed.

Today I’ll start weaving. After I do a few hours of (yuk) spring cleaning. Necessary if I want to get this house sold. And I do. I have some help coming later this week, but want to get it started. It’s all about motivation, and today I’m at least slightly motivated, so I gotta take advantage of that.
