This hole appeared in my front garden. Jack didn’t do it. Squirrels live in trees so I they didn’t do it. I had millions of chipmunks in the country and I think their holes were smaller than this. So my guess is bunnies. That they see all the veggies and figured they’d live close by to be the first to get the stash.
Anyone else care to chime in with your opinion?
UPDATE: There have been several ideas of types of rodent it might be. (PLEASE not a rat!) But regardless of what type of rodent this is, it’s not good. This hole is about 18″ from my foundation. So what do I do about it?
Definitely groundhogs, skunks and possum around. Shawn and Pam had a while family of hedgehogs take residence under their deck years ago and I’ve seen both skunks and opossum in the neighborhood. My guess is rat. The others are t quite as nocturnal and that’s such a public spot no beast would dare dig during the day.
Looks about the right size foe a rabbit’s nest. That’s what I’d bet on.
I’ve seen squirrels dig holes if they think theres something yummy to be found in them or if they want to bury things but that doesn’t seem to be the case there. I bet you do have both skunks and groundhogs, but that’s surely not a groundhog hole and I don’t know what a skunk burrow looks like, but I would guess it would be bigger than that.
Yup, I’m betting on a rabbit nest…
Thanks, Judy.
I may be modifying my size statements. Although I never went into a field and really looked at the size of a groundhog hole when I lived in the sticks, and I haven’t seen any in the city, it might be large enough to accommodate a small-medium sized groundhog. And I KNOW we have raccoons here; I’ve seen them. My biggest wish is that it’s not a rat.
I agree, Theresa, they are all rodents, some cuter than others. I haven’t seen any skunks in the city, but I do believe they are here. I’ve never seen a ground squirrel…don’t really know what they are. My country moles and shrews were all small; doesn’t mean they are in the city, though. Do send me a terrier. 😉
Susan – too small for groundhogs, which I’ve never seen in the city anyway. I will definitely keep an eye on this.
Groundhogs?
Skunks! 😉 If it was here I would say ground squirrels, perhaps a mole or shrew? The cat caught a huge mole the other week, rat sized. Do rats make holes? All rodents to me, some with cute tails others not. I have a few terriers who be happy to dispatch it for you.
