Handwoven Scarves - Cotton & Blends

Cotton is a great fiber. It's easy to care for, easy to wear, and remarkably versatile. Cotton has been around for centuries, and cotton clothing lasts well, retaining its shape and color for years. Cotton is equally happy standing on its own and when playing with other fibers. Organic cotton and colorgrown cotton scarves are ideal for people with chemical sensitivities. Some of my cotton scarves are made from hand painted yarn, all dyed with low-impact, fiber-reactive dyes so they're richly colored and environmentally friendly.

bulky organic handwoven scarf
Bulky Organic Cotton
Handwoven Scarves

I like to melt into the creamy softness of these warm, bulky, organic cotton scarves around my neck on Saturday mornings when my house hasn't yet warmed up from the overnight thermostat setback. Of course it's also wonderful outside when the cold winds blow.

The pecan and creamy white yarns used to weave these scarves provide great counterpoints, showing the complexity of the weave design well. Their neutral colors ensure that this hand made scarf will work well with most of your winter fashions.

These bulky organic cotton handwoven scarves are 8" wide and 72" long, plus hand knotted fringe. It is long and thick, perfect for wrapping well when those cold winds blow. Although made of cotton, for best results I recommend hand laundering this hand made scarf and drying it flat.

Blue Violets handwoven scarves
Blue Violets Lace Borders
Handwoven Bamboo & Cotton Scarves

The name of these scarves tells the whole color story. The hand painted yarn has the green of the leaves and many of the shades of blue and purple you'll find in violets, especially the little wild ones that grow in my lawn.

These scarves have been woven with a border of lace down the length of both sides, adding to the natural lightness of bamboo. (Click on the image for a larger view.) They look great over pale or dark colors, and drape gracefully around your neck - perfect indoors all year, or for three-season outdoor wear.

These handwoven scarves are 8" wide and 72 " long, plus double-twisted fringe. They're easy to care for - a quick hand wash and dry flat is all that's needed, although you can give them a quick press with a cool iron if you'd like.

About Organic Cotton

Organic cotton is very eco-friendly. Grown without chemical fertilizers or pesticides, it's also a great fabric for people with sensitivities to other fabrics. Most of the organic cotton I work with was grown and processed in the U.S.A., finally handwoven in rural New York State, making it a truly American product. Good for you, good for the environment, good for the economy. These organic cotton scarves are made from yarn purchased from one woman who's concerned with the health of our little blue planet, and handwoven by another - me!

Organic cotton is easy to care for - feel free to machine wash and dry your handwoven scarf.

About Cotton Chenille

A single strand of cotton chenille yarn looks like the fuzzy caterpillar that gives it its name. When woven into scarves, these thick fibers retain their fuzziness, reminding me of luxurious spa robes.

Like all natural fibers, these handmade cotton chenille scarves will wick away moisture to ensure that you stay warm and comfortable.

Cotton chenille has a rather matte finish. It is thick and warm, while still wrapping nicely. Although the cotton can be machine laundered, I recommend hand washing and drying your scarf.

About Egyptian Cotton

As the name implies, Egyptian cotton was originally grown in Egypt. It's now grown in many places around the world, although every climate isn't suitable for this fine fiber. Egyptian cotton has a much longer staple, or fiber, than other types of cotton. This means that as it's spun into thread, the thread is much smoother. That's why the best, most luxurious bedding, towels, and robes are made from Egyptian cotton.

Egyptian cotton is easy to care for - most can be machine washed and dried, although I prefer to hand wash the complex weaves to be sure to avoid any snags.

Like every Second Wind product, each scarf is proudly individually handmade in the U.S.A. I wove each scarf shown here on my vintage loom in rural, western New York state.

Persian handwoven scarf
Persian Cotton Chenille
Handwoven Scarves

The pinks, blues, and purples in this handwoven scarf is reminiscent of a French impressionist painting, beauty that comes from gorgeous hand painted yarns. The cotton chenille in these scarves is woven into a medium weight scarf that retains flexibility and drape while providing warmth and comfort around your neck. The colors in this chenille scarf look great with both dark and light clothes underneath; its lighter weave makes it easy to wear indoors over your turtleneck or outdoors to keep you warm and cozy.

Like all cotton chenille, these natural fiber scarves have a soft matte finish. These handwoven scarves are 8" wide and 72" long, plus double-twisted fringe. I recommend hand laundering for the best results. Fluff in a dryer if desired.

A bright, sunny yellow and a rich, creamy yellow-orange blend to create scarves that make you smile. There's something about the particular hues in these hand painted yarns that attracts even people who claim to never like yellow.

The cotton chenille in these beautiful hand made scarves is scrumptiously thick and warm. This natural fiber has a soft matte finish.

These handwoven scarves are 6 1/2" wide and 64" long, double-twisted fringe. Although they're made of cotton, I recommend hand washing for all my handwoven scarves. Wash in warm water and lay flat to dry. After they're dry, you can fluff them in the dryer if you'd like.

Handwoven Scarves

Need a bit spice in your life? Wrap one of these hot little numbers around you neck. They'll add a pop of rich color to your outfit and a touch of warmth when you need it.

Handwoven using hand painted yarn, each of these scarves offers something a bit different. On the left, the scarf has an almost-plaid appearance, with the same variegated yarn used throughout. Or choose the scarf in the middle, with a burnt sienna cotton bringing out the middle color tones. If you like more drama, the scarf on the right is for you, with black cotton highlighting the unusual weaving pattern. (Click on the image for more detail.) When you check out, tell me which scarf you want or let me select one for you.

Gems1 handwoven scarf
Gems Bamboo & Cotton
Handwoven Scarves 1 & 2

These handwoven scarves are indeed gems. They're beautiful, soft, easy to wear, and one-of-a-kind.

Woven from a hand painted blend of bamboo & cotton, these scarves look great over jeans and dresses, blouses and coats. The scar on top is crossed with emerald, so the greens in the variegated yarn predominate. On the bottom I've used deep purple rayon, bringing that out that. (Click on the photo for more details.)

There's only one of each of these handwoven scarves; they are 7 1/2" wide and 72" long, plus fringe. For best results, hand wash in warm water, lay flat to dry. If needed, press with warm iron.

Gems2 handwoven scarf
Gems Bamboo & Cotton
Handwoven Scarves 3 & 4

It's hard to believe that these two scarves have the same hand painted blend of bamboo & cotton yarn as the two Gems scarves at left. By crossing the warp with different colors of yarn, the finished scarf has a look all its own.

The scarf on the top has a turquoise bamboo & cotton weft, creating lengthwise stripes of the variegated yarn. On the bottom, I crossed it with lavender cotton yarn, bringing out the pale purples. (Click on the image for more details.)

These handmade scarves are each 7 1/2" wide and 72" long plus fringe. I recommend hand washing in warm water, then laying flat to dry. You can press with a warm iron if you'd like.
