Handwoven Scarves - Chenille

I just love rayon chenille. These handwoven scarves are plush & warm, wrapping you in luxury. Rayon chenille also has a green sheen. The thickness of the fiber combined with the sheen result in a scarf that can change appearance dramatically based on the way the light hits it.

I also weave with cotton chenille. These thick scarves are as comfy as your most comfortable bathrobe, and just as warm.

To ensure that the fringe stays thick, I take the extra time to make an interesting double-twisted fringe on all my chenille scarves.

There's little that's more classic than black. And when you choose the solid black, handwoven rayon chenille scarf on the left, you'll get a black that's remarkably deep and dark, but shines with a lovely sheen.

If you're in the mood for a bit more brightness, pick the scarf on the right. (Click on the image for more details.) Handwoven in a combination of diamond and wave patterns, the light silver yarn gives this scarf a completely different look than the solid black. Tell me which scarf you want when you order, or let me choose one for you.

About Rayon Chenille

The name "chenille" comes from the French word meaning caterpillar, surely because of the fuzzy look of a single strand of this interesting fiber. When handwoven into a scarf, chenille retains its fuzziness but gains strength and stability.

Rayon is both as a natural fiber and manmade. How is this possible? Rayon is made from cellulose: natural plant fibers. The fibers are then chemically treated, extruded, and spun, introducing lots of manmade processes. Since its inception in the 1920's, rayon has undergone many developmental stages.

Rayon chenille is lustrous and drapes beautifully. Starting soft from the day you get it, your scarf will become even softer and more luxurious with wear. For best results, handwash your rayon chenille scarf and lay it flat to dry.

About Cotton Chenille

A single strand of cotton chenille yarn looks like the fuzzy caterpillar that gives it its name. When woven into scarves, these thick fibers retain their fuzziness, reminding me of luxurious spa robes.

Like all natural fibers, these handmade cotton chenille scarves will wick away moisture to ensure that you stay warm and comfortable.

Cotton chenille has a rather matte finish. It is thick and warm, while still wrapping nicely. Although the cotton can be machine laundered, I recommend hand washing and drying your scarf.

Like every Second Wind product, each scarf is proudly individually handmade in the U.S.A. I wove each scarf shown here on my vintage loom in rural, western New York state.

Dusky Woods
Rayon Chenille Handwoven Scarves

I live in the country, surrounded by hardwood forests. In the autumn, the hillsides change their colors almost daily. They look different at dusk than at midday, and whether in light fog or bright sunshine.

These handwoven rayon chenille scarves are amazingly reminiscent of late fall woods in the evening. The colors are muted, but not by any means absent. They are subtly beautiful, rich and deep.

The scarf on top has a solid rust weft, bringing out the many russet tones. On the bottom is a scarf that's completely variegated, with flecks of color throughout. Specify your choice when ordering, or let me select for you.

Each of these handwoven rayon chenille scarves are 7.5" wide and 72" long, plus double-twisted fringe, I recommend hand washing & laying flat to dry.

The rich blues, purples, and navy of gemtone colors always call to me. I am drawn to the depth of the colors, and when the beautiful sheen and luxury of rayon chenille is added to the mix, it's a never-fail combination.

The rayon chenille in these scarves is all hand painted by a fiber artist. Each scarf has a thin stripe of purple along one edge, with the majority of the scarf a variegated blend of bright blue, purple, and navy. (Click on the image for more detail.)
